Our New Garden – Growing, Exploring & Learning Outdoors
We are incredibly proud of our new outdoor garden at Buzzee Beez Pre-School. This has been a very special project for us and something we have wanted to achieve for a long time.
Why We Created Our Garden
We believe that outdoor learning is an essential part of a child’s development. While we have always provided outdoor experiences, we wanted to create a permanent, secure and inspiring garden space where children could freely explore, investigate, take appropriate risks and learn through nature.
We are also very aware that not every child has access to a garden or large outdoor space at home. We wanted our children to have somewhere they could dig in the soil, grow their own food, watch plants and wildlife change through the seasons, get muddy, climb, balance and simply enjoy being outdoors.
Most importantly, we wanted the garden to be much more than a playground. We wanted to create an outdoor classroom full of wonderful learning experiences.
How Our Garden Became Possible
Our dream became a reality after we successfully secured capital grant funding to develop and extend our outdoor provision.
The funding enabled us to transform the area into a secure, purpose-built space specifically designed around the needs, interests and development of our children.
Learning Through Nature
Our garden supports all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), often without children even realising just how much they are learning.
Digging, climbing, carrying and balancing support physical development. Growing and preparing food develops children's understanding of the world and encourages healthy choices. Counting seeds, measuring plants and comparing sizes introduces early mathematics naturally. Talking about what they can see, hear, smell and feel develops communication and vocabulary.
The garden also provides endless opportunities for creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and imaginative play.
Children are encouraged to take responsibility too – watering plants, caring for the environment, harvesting produce and learning where their food comes from.
Supporting Wellbeing & Confidence
Outdoor play can have a wonderful impact on children's emotional wellbeing.
Our garden gives children space to move, regulate, explore at their own pace and experience the calming benefits of being outdoors. It provides opportunities for energetic physical play as well as quieter moments away from a busy environment.
Children can challenge themselves safely – perhaps climbing a little higher, balancing a little further or trying something they were unsure of before. These small achievements help develop confidence, resilience, independence and a real sense of achievement.
Growing a Sustainable Future
Sustainability is an important part of what we teach at Buzzee Beez.
Through our allotment, composting, water collection, planting and growing, children experience sustainability rather than simply hearing about it.
They can follow the whole journey from seed to plant to plate, learning to care for living things and beginning to understand how their choices can affect the world around them.
Our garden also complements our work around healthy eating and Nourishing Our Future, giving children opportunities to grow, harvest, prepare and taste fresh foods.
A Garden That Will Grow With Us
Our new garden isn't a finished project – and we don't want it to be.
We want it to continue growing and changing with our children. New plants will be grown, new ideas will develop and each group of children will leave their own little mark on the space.
For us, the garden represents exactly what we want childhood at Buzzee Beez to be about:
Getting muddy, asking questions, taking safe risks, growing things, discovering nature, building confidence, using imagination, making memories and learning through real experiences.
